White noise is a controversial subject in the paranormal field. It’s use has yet to be legitimated, but it’s popularity continues to rise. Naturally this is due to the popularity of paranormal research in Hollywood, which is how “ghost hunting” became so popular itself.

White noise itself is pretty simple to understand. Imagine taking all frequencies and wavelengths, shaking them up in a Yahtzee cup then throwing them out through a set of speakers. The name “white noise” comes from the idea that it is the combination of all wavelengths, and the color white is the combination of all colors. Radio and TV static and running water are good examples of white noise, and have applications when using white noise during an EVP session.

Entities are said to have 2 ways of utilizing white noise to form words:
Have you ever mouthed words as a kid into a large fan and created words without actually saying anything? This is essentially the idea. The noise is there, and somehow an entity can reorganize the sounds to create words.

Try it yourself by turning up radio or TV static to a loud volume and mouthing words. They will be faint and more than likely incoherent, but this is the case with most EVPs as well, which is one supporting factor in the idea that this concept is applicable.

The other idea is that the white noise filters out ambient sounds, allowing clearer EVPs. Pretty simple there.

This, like so many other concepts and methods, is based off of theory at best, with very little scientific proof of its effectiveness. This doesn’t mean it can’t be true, it simply means that you as a researcher have to decide whether or not you believe it to be true and if you want to use it or not.

I, for one, don’t use white noise.
